Melbourne Victory Women today announced their complete squad and shirt sponsors for the W-League season ahead, beginning with their Grand Final rematch with rivals Sydney FC at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday November 10th. Lisa De Vanna and the returning Jess Fishlock headline a squad that looks well set to go one better than last season’s Grand Final heartbreak.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce the squad. It’s taken a little while to get it all together but I’m confident it’s a very strong squad and a squad that can go one further than last year,” the new head coach Dave Edmondson said.
Edmondson paid tribute to his star signing, praising de Vanna’s level of intensity at training, the expectations on herself and support for the younger players.
“From an excitement value and an attacking threat value, Lisa was a key signing for me. The thing people don’t get or don’t see is that Lisa has influence with the rest of the squad and her professionalism.”
Stephanie Catley will don the captain’s armband. “She’s shown great leadership qualities throughout the year…a great player in her own right…it’s also a real look to the future as well…it was a pretty easy decision,” Edmondson added.
With the impressive squad the club has built, Edmondson admitted the expectations are now higher than last season Coach Edmondson said: “The expectations are different (than last year)… We wanna compete for trophies, that’s what I wanna do.”
He continued,“Expectations probably are different, but not different to what we expect anyway.”
Edmondson shed light on his new international signings “Jess Fishlock obviously returning was a no-brainer, after her performances last year.”
“Jess Samuelsson forced her way to the Swedish National team, very strong and very athletic, really fits into the way I want to play. I think she’ll be a great addition.”
Edmondson opened up on the way he wanted his team to play, “If you look at the squad, we’re going to be an attacking side. I expect us to score lots of goals, we’ll take risks to do that and play positively.”
The real bolters for the squad come locally, with 17-year-old Emily Hulbert (Box Hill United) and 16-year-old from the Emerging Athletes Program Beattie Goad selected for the first time.
“There will be no pressure on the likes of Beattie and Emily to be there playing 90 minutes from day one.”
“But they’re both competitive and ambitious girls. They will be trying to force their way to the starting eleven. Age is just a number, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough…they’re there to play a part as well.”
New sponsors were also announced, Jetts Fitness and Banking on Football will feature on the front and back of the jersey respectively as major partners, with Pro Sports Group and Match Attax Trading Card Game taking up positions on the shorts.
“Today, FFV is delighted to announce an array of corporate partners and I would like to take the opportunity to welcome two major sponsors Jetts Fitness and Banking on Football. The FFA is also delighted to announce today that Pro Sports Group will also be key partners.” FFV CEO Mitchell Murphy said.
