Glenorchy Knights have begun their 2015 PS4 Victory League campaign in the best possible fashion, sweeping aside Launceston City 4-1 at KGV on Saturday.
After a less-than-impressive pre-season, little was expected of the Knights, but they produced a strong performance to easily account for a disappointing City outfit.
Launceston had the better of the opening exchanges, and they were unlucky to see Bradley Martin’s shot ping off the upright in the 24th minute.
From that point onwards it was all Knights.
Midfielder Phin Aldridge, a standout performer all game, tucked home in the 30th minute, before Aaron Wilson buried a penalty seven minutes later following a handball in the box to double the advantage.
Omar Murati had a great chance to cut the deficit to one on the stroke of half time, but he lacked composure and his volley flew over the crossbar.
The second half continued where the first left off, with the Knights again creating the better of the chances.
Jade Clay scored a header from a corner in the 61st minute, his goal ending City’s resistance.
Clay scored again in the 82nd minute after beating his defender for pace and coolly slotting past Launceston goalkeeper David Smith from the angle.
Trent Mitchell scored for City in stoppage time, but it was merely a consolation goal.
Glenorchy coach Mark Broadbent was pleased with the way his youthful team proved that they deserved respect in the competition, but said they would not be getting carried away.
“We’ll enjoy it, there’s no doubt about that, but we’re going to be straight to the grindstone on Monday and Wednesday,” he said.
Launceston City coach Lino Sciulli was disappointed with the result, but happy with his team’s effort.
“I thought we mixed it with them for most of the game, it’s just a couple of crucial little errors at the wrong time and they put their goals away,” he said.
Glenorchy will meet Kingborough next week, while Launceston City will now need to prepare for a cross town derby with Northern Rangers.
