Football Federation Victoria (FFV) has today completed the signing of Matilda and former Perth Glory midfielder Ella Mastrantonio, making her the newest addition to Melbourne Victory’s Westfield W-League team.
The 22-year-old was released by Perth Glory last week and is a former Melbourne Victory player, having made 11 appearances in a consistent 2010/2011 season.
Mastrantonio has 57 W-League appearances and six Matildas caps to her name and joins Maika Ruyter-Hooley and Lauren Barnes as Victory’s three signings in the past fortnight.
Melbourne Victory coach David Edmondson said he was pleased to have secured the services of Mastrantonio ahead of his side’s finals campaign.
“Ella [Mastrantonio] left Perth last week and I became aware of her availability and contacted her to see if she was interested in a move to Melbourne,” Edmondson said.
“She was very keen so we arranged for her to come down and train and once she showed what she was capable of and offers to the side, it was an easy decision to sign her.
“I’ve seen a lot of her over the years and she offers a strong presence in the midfield, a good football brain and a determination to succeed, all of which fit in well with our playing style and philosophy.”
Edmondson said Mastrantonio would provide experienced cover for holding midfielder Katie Hoyle, who will be away on international duty for New Zealand in Round 12 and the semi-final weekend.
“We have operated a smaller than ideal squad all season due to issues with Rebekah Stott and obviously Ash Brown’s injury, so this signing, along with Lauren Barnes and Maika [Ruyter-Hooley], really just fills our squad,” he said.
“Ella will provide some experienced cover for Katie Hoyle and we can push on into the semi finals with competition for places and confidence that we can cover injuries or international duties.”
Mastrantonio will wear the No.21 shirt.
