The Grand Final in the National Premier Leagues Queensland Womens competition will be played out by the top two from the regular season after navigating their way through the finals to meet for the fourth time this campaign.
Premiers, The Gap, progressed to the final with a win over the Palm Beach Sharks in week one of the finals and have enjoyed two weeks off, while Palm Beach had a week off before beating Sunshine Coast Fire 3-1 last weekend to set up a rematch.
In three clashes this season both sides have picked up one win a piece with one draw. The Sharks winning at home in round three before the two sides played out a 2-2 draw in round 14. The telling factor may be The Gap’s 2-0 win in the first week of the finals.
The Gap side will be lead by Leah Curtis, Ruth Blackburn and Bethany Ashton who have netted 52 goals this season between them. Gabirelle Marzano, who netted twice in the quarter final, taking her tally to 16 for the season is also a player to watch.
Palm Beach will be spearheaded by attacking duo Lauren Brown and Deeanna Thompson who have netted an outstanding 56 goals this season with Thompson’s 35 making her a runaway Golden Boot winner. The duo’s exploits have not been missed by Brisbane Roar’s W-League coach Belinda Wilson, with both currently training with the side this pre-season.
Due to fixture congestion at The Gaps regular home of Walton Bridge Reserve, the inaugural NPL Queensland Womens Grand Final will be held at the nearby Spencer Park, home of fellow NPL side Brisbane City.
