Following initial reports from The Australian that suggested Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo could be on his way to the A-League, Football Central is able to offer further information.
Lou Sticca, of Tribal Sports Group, has met with Pirlo and his representatives in the hopes of brokering a deal that would see the World Cup winner bringing his artistry to Australian shores.
“At this stage lets say I am selling Australia and the A-League to Pirlo,” Sticca revealed.
With no international marquee on their roster, Sydney FC have emerged as the favourites to sign Pirlo although coach Graham Arnold has dismissed that notion. It remains to be seen if this is another case of Arnold’s much loved mind games. Pirlo has also been heavily linked with a move to Major League Soccer side New York City FC.
“I know good and well that New York is a huge attraction, plus he owns a house there.
“As far as clubs are concerned that could accommodate Andrea, let’s wait and see but I am sure there would be interest from one or two.”
Pirlo still has a year remaining on his Juventus contract but it is believed the club are open to allowing the veteran to depart.
“If it’s time for Andrea to seek new adventures then I feel it my duty to plant Australia there for his consideration.
“Even if it’s for the following season, I just want him serious about Australia.
“I have sought formal permission from Juve to talk to Andrea’s agent.”
Pirlo of course visited Australia last winter during Juventus’ tour to play the A-League All Stars, something which could boost the chances of him playing here.
“I will meet Andrea’s agent and position Australia there for consideration. One thing in Australia’s favour is Andrea was in Sydney with the Juventus team for preseason, so he has at least seen first hand how beautiful our country is. Maybe that will work in our favour.”
