The Roar Review: 2015-16 Youth Setup

A new looked Brisbane Roar youth will take the field this weekend in round one of the National Youth League against Perth Glory with a string of players elevated from the clubs Under 18 set-up.

In line with the clubs new youth philosophy of bringing players in and trying to build them up for a first team spot by the age of 18, the Brisbane squad has a youthful look to it with several players still just 16.

New manager Josh McCloughan will have his work cut out in developing this latest crop of youngsters, with the clubs football department recently stating that players have a two year window to progress to the level required before moving on.

Amongst the more senior players are goalkeeper Tomislav Bilic, defenders Jaiden Walker and Cameron Crestani, midfielder Mitchell Hore and striker Nicholas D’Agostino, all of who have previous experience at the NYL level.

In addition to those added to the squad from the Under 18 Young Roar setup such as Adam Sawyer and Dane Ingham, a number of players have been recruited from outside of the Roar system.

Andre Jannese (AIS), Mark Rodic (Blacktown City), Harry Sawyer (Western Pride), Jayden Prasad (Redlands) and Joseph Champness (Moreton Bay) are amongst the players that have arrived at the Roar from various teams around the NPL set-up.

It is a vastly changed squad from the one which came second on goal difference last term, with the likes of Patrick Theodore, Luke Pavlou, Lachlan Jackson, Conor O’Neil, Stephen O’Neil and Shelford Dais all moving on.

The squad also doesn’t include striker Abrahim Yango or full-back Matthew Schmidt, both of who have been in and around the A-League set-up at various times in the past 12 months, but weren’t included in the list of released players last month either.

Brisbane open their 2015-16 NYL campaign away to Perth Glory on Sunday afternoon before their first home game the following week against Melbourne Victory down at Redlands.

The new look NYL format will see Brisbane play home and away games against Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory before the top team in that pool plays the top team from the other pool in a Grand Final.

The 16 player National Youth League Squad is
Goalkeepers: Andre Jannese, Tomislav Bilic
Defenders: Jaiden Walker, Cameron Crestani, Tom Jarrod, Mark Rodic.
Midfielders: Thomas Miller, Liam O‘Bryan, Mitchell Hore, Adam Sawyer, Daniel Driver.
Forwards: Dane Ingham, Nicholas D’Agostino, Harry Sawyer, Jayden Prasad, Joseph Champness.
